Depression and Chronic Pain

ARE U OK? http://geni.us/sva4iUY
Due to psychosomatic symptoms of mental illness, chronic pain can be caused by depression. Meaning that because of our depression we can feel like we are in pain all the time. Today I want to talk about how chronic pain (or being in pain for many weeks without a break) can lead to depression.

Imagine if you are in pain more days then not, it would be really hard to sleep, you wouldn’t want to be out with other people, and you may even struggle to concentrate. There can also be legal and financial issues associated with chronic pain as our medical bills pile up and we attempt to get disability. I only mention these issues so that you can grasp just how hard having chronic pain can be, and why it is so closely linked to depression.

I also did a video on chronic illness with Hank Green where he talked about grieving the loss of what his life could have looked like. Click here for more: https://youtu.be/IXbAYg5pp9M
He mentions how important it is that we try and focus on what we can do instead of focusing on the things that we can’t do anymore. Shifting our thoughts to a more positive place is so helpful and I honestly believe can change our overall outlook on life.

There are also treatment options available! Seeing a therapist who can work with you on processing the loss and grief that you may feel as well as helping you focus on what you can do will really help. They also mention how medication not only for your pain but also for your depression (ie. SSRIs, SNRIs, etc) can really help. Lastly, there are treatment centers that work to help us overcome both issues at the same time. The Mayo Clinic has a great one (link below) but if going into a treatment center like that doesn’t work for you, you can also treat each issue separately through pain management and psychotherapy.

The overall message I want you to hear is that help is available and it can get better. Even if the pain we feel doesn’t go away, we can find ways to better manage our emotions around it and heal our relationships with ourselves and others.

I hope you found this helpful! I know this is something many in our community struggle with, and that’s why it’s important to share this video and your experience in the comments so we can learn from each other and feel better.

Hey guys! This was day 4 of a 5-day #chronicpain flare-up. I wanted to share my experience of how I cope and care for myself during times like this. Extremely happy to say on day 5, I was able to walk, manage my pain and even lift weights for 20 minutes which was a huge accomplishment! In the past my flare-ups have lasted a lot longer at times because I refused to stop, pay attention and listen to what my body needed at any given moment. It’s still a struggle to bridge the gap between my active self and my still self, but one major thing I’ve learned is that remaining full of as much positivity and self-compassion as I can is a big component of what helps my body heal that much faster. I hope this helps give you guys some ideas and makes you feel less alone during your own flare-up days. I’d love to hear your favorite ways to deal and heal! Lots of love ♥

Tell Me a Story: Managing Chronic Pain from Ehlers Danlos Syndrome

pain No Comments »

http://www.cincinnatichildrens.org/service/p/pain/services/pain-management-clinic/
Pain is a drag. It can wear you down. Even when you’re 12. Hallie Pollard, a pre-teen ballet dancer, knows what it’s like to deal with aches that get in the way of life. She started coming to the Pain Clinic at Cincinnati Children’s last year. She was a double-jointed athlete whose tricks began to hurt her. Specialists diagnosed her with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, or EDS, a condition that makes her joints hyper elastic and prone to pain. Dr. Ken Goldschneider and the pain management team at Cincinnati Children’s taught her how to manage her symptoms and be in control of her pain. Hallie says she has her life back. “Pain’s not controlling it anymore,” she says. “I’m controlling it.”

Innovations in Chronic Pain Management Video – Brigham and Women’s Hospital

pain No Comments »

Edgar L. Ross, MD, Director, Pain Management Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), discusses how chronic pain differs from acute pain. Chronic pain management, explains,Dr. Ross, is effectively treated through a team-based approach that requires the patient to be an active participant in the treatment plan. The BWH Pain Management Center provides multidisciplinary care for chronic pain management, including experts in psychiatry, psychology, neurology, physiatry, and anesthesiology. Treatment plans address the physical and psychological components of chronic pain and rehabilitation.

Dr. Ross also describes research being conducted at BWH including clinical trials evaluating new pain medications, a mobile app designed to help patients manage chronic pain outside of the doctor’s office and a risk assessment tool that helps predict if patients should avoid the use of opiate medications.

Mayo Clinic Study Suggests Those Who Have Chronic Pain May Need to Assess Vitamin D Status

pain No Comments »

Mayo Clinic research shows a correlation between inadequate vitamin D levels and the amount of narcotic medication taken by patients who have chronic pain. This correlation is an important finding as researchers discover new ways to treat chronic pain. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, chronic pain is the leading cause of disability in the United States. These patients often end up taking narcotic-type pain medication such as morphine, fentanyl or oxycodone.
This study found that patients who required narcotic pain medication, and who also had inadequate levels of vitamin D, were taking much higher doses of pain medication — nearly twice as much — as those who had adequate levels. Similarly, these patients self-reported worse physical functioning and worse overall health perception. In addition, a correlation was noted between increasing body mass index (a measure of obesity) and decreasing levels of vitamin D. Study results were published in a recent edition of Pain Medicine.
This is an important finding as we continue to investigate the causes of chronic pain, says Michael Turner, M.D., a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician at Mayo Clinic and lead author of the study. Vitamin D is known to promote both bone and muscle strength. Conversely, deficiency is an under-recognized source of diffuse pain and impaired neuromuscular functioning. By recognizing it, physicians can significantly improve their patients pain, function and quality of life.
