Usually a parents brings a child complaints of pain and limp around the hip joint. This is very common. Sometimes without any reason the child starts with pain in the hip joint and limp. Such patients have to be investigated to avoid future complications and future disabilities to the hip joint. Common causes of the painful hip and limp in a child is transient synovitis that invariably occurs following post viral infections or a trivial trauma. Some of the other common causes of limp in a child is a Perthes disease is a lack of blood supply to the hip joint or the head of the femur. It invariably occurs in children and if left untreated, will lead to disastrous problems and disabilities to patients. Other causes are in obese child a slipped capital femoral epiphysis can be treated if diagnosed early and intervened surgically at the earliest. Otherwise a child will have a permanent limp and will carry it into his adulthood and it renders the child disabled. There are other conditions like inflammatory conditions for painful hip in children. It can be a painful juvenile arthritis. Sometimes some infections around the hip joint can also cause a painful hip syndrome. In Indians scenario it is tuberculosis that affects the hip joint. So considering all these factors there are such children with painful hip that has to be evaluated and it has to be treated adequately.

Leg pains and cramps are usually common 4 weeks after caesarian section. The various reasons can be during pregnancy there is loosening of hip joints and ligaments affecting the legs, knees and back but after delivery the body has to come back to normal and this may be painful. So take regular calcium, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12 , iron. Sleep properly, do gentle exercises, stretching exercises, yoga, pranayama, drink plenty of water if possible attend the post natal exercise class. Avoid wearing high heels. Avoid carrying heavy weight. Expose yourself to adequate sunlight for the daily sunshine Vitamin D. rule out other causes by taking a visit to your obstetrician who may also take the help of orthopedician or neurologist to rule out other causes like deep vein thrombosis, hematoma in the epidural site region, sciatica, that is the disk compression, presence of any minor fractures, varicose veins. Hip pain can be from a number of reasons. Often our hips will be really stiff when we first wake up or after a long day on our feet. The stretches and exercises can easily be done in your bed.
The first two stretches are an active assisted (AA) hamstring stretch and a knee to chest stretch. These will help stretch the muscles that are connected to your hips/pelvis and help relieve pain and tightness.
Next pelvic tilts and bridges are a great way to not only loosen up the hip and pelvic area, but they also help strengthen your core muscles as well.
Finally, a straight leg raise (SLR) will help strengthen your hip flexor muscles.

Last week, I had a pediatric patient come in with fever, cough, and nasal congestion for one month.
The patient was placed on amoxicillin and finished the antibiotic course three days prior. Now, he’s coming in complaining with the inability to bear weight on his left hip.
There’s a broad differential for the child presenting with hip pain. Much of it can be narrowed down using the history and the age of the child.
I like to further break down the pain into four categories:
1. Inflammatory
2. Infectious
3. Orthopedic
4. Neoplastic
Today, I want to talk about hip pain in the pediatric patient!
