If you have hip pain on the outside part of your hip and want to put a stop to that pain, you’ve come to the right place!

In this video I’m going to show you 4 of the most effective stretching and strengthening exercises to alleviate lateral hip pain.

WHAT IS THE PAIN ON MY LATERAL HIP?

In most instances, pain in this area is caused by a condition known as “hip bursitis”. A “bursa” is a small, fluid-filled sack that adds lubrication and decreases friction in the muscles that control the hip; the suffix “itis” on the end means inflammation.

The second most-common cause would be a tendonitis in one of the tendons that acts on the hip in this area.

HOW TO TREAT LATERAL HIP PAIN

In the case of both bursitis and tendonitis – this inflammation is most often caused by tightness in the structures and and weakness in the muscles surrounding your hip. The best way to treat those deficiencies is with the right stretches and exercises to relieve tension and increase strength.

That’s exactly what you get in this video! We’ll start with 4 great stretches for your hips, we’ll follow it up with 4 great strengthening exercises, and by the end of it – I know you’ll be feeling a lot better.

Patient has been experiencing gas pain for the past 30 years. The pain has gotten worse in the past 7-8 years where it would wake him up in the middle of the night every 2-3 hours.

Meticulous structural test and Gonstead examination reveals structural abnormalities at the 5th lumbar and 6th dorsal vertebrae. The 5th Lumbar nerve obstruction resulted in constipation that led to increase bowel gas. The 6th Dorsal nerve obstruction resulted in his pyloric sphincter to be wide open when it’s suppose to be closed. As a result of that dysfunction, the bowel gas went into his stomach which is called trapped gas syndrome or magenblase syndrome.

Correction of the 5th Lumbar and 6th Dorsal vertebra led to restoration of 5L and 6D nerve function. Reduced constipation results in reduce bowel gas and with properly functioning closed pyloric sphincter = no more gas pain and restful sleep!

5 Hip Pain Relief Stretches & Exercises You Can Do In Bed

These hip pain relief stretches & exercises don’t necessarily need to be done in bed, but they may help relieve hip pain in the morning before getting up, and/or when going to bed at night. Hip pain can be from a number of reasons. Often our hips will be really stiff when we first wake up or after a long day on our feet. The stretches and exercises can easily be done in your bed.

The first two stretches are an active assisted (AA) hamstring stretch and a knee to chest stretch. These will help stretch the muscles that are connected to your hips/pelvis and help relieve pain and tightness.

Next pelvic tilts and bridges are a great way to not only loosen up the hip and pelvic area, but they also help strengthen your core muscles as well.

Finally, a straight leg raise (SLR) will help strengthen your hip flexor muscles.

The first stretch and exercise are lying down. Stretching your hip flexors with a knee to chest stretch can decrease hip pain. Strengthening the hip flexors will also help stabilize the joint to reduce pain.

In standing, hip flexion/extension and hip abduction/adduction movements will help strengthen the muscles as well as increase mobility in the hip joint. Changing the speed can make it a different exercise for each.

Finally, a standing hip flexor stretch is a great way to stretch without having to lie down.

Relief from Hip Bursitis

It struck Nancy Casey without warning.

“I was like ‘oh wow my back hurts on the right side’ and the next morning when I got up I could hardly move,” says Nancy Casey, hip bursitis patient.

The crippling pain was actually hip bursitis. One of the most common forms of hip pain, it flares up when the lubricating sac in your hip joint becomes inflamed.

“I’ll ask them to point to where the pain is located and the patient will point with one finger to one side of the hip and they’ll be exquisitely tender over this area,” says Dr. Christopher Dawson, physical medicine and rehabilitation physician on Lee Memorial Health System’s medical staff.

So what’s behind hip bursitis? Several things put you at risk. Including overuse, an injury, prior surgery, bone spurs, spine disease and rheumatoid arthritis. In Casey’s case, it stemmed from her legs.

“Biomechanics play a huge role in pathology in the back and in the hips and that’s why I assess gate and the foot structure as well as leg length on physical exam,” says Dr. Dawson.

Casey didn’t know it, but one leg was longer than the other. And it threw her body mechanics off. After reviewing her options, she decided to give injection therapy a shot.

“The procedure involves a patient laying on their contralateral hip. We establish a sterile field; I then anesthetize the soft tissue and advance a spinal needle under ultrasound guidance or fluoroscopic guidance, and then go ahead and either inject dye if I’m using fluoroscopy or go ahead and inject if I’m utilizing ultrasound,” says Dr. Dawson.

As quickly as it appeared, the pain was gone.

“He did the injection and in no time at all I was able to lift my leg. I could get in the car and do everything I’m doing. I mean it’s like a miracle,” says Casey.

Casey is now moving full speed ahead, making time for exercise to increase strength and flexibility in her hips.
